Starting to read the Bible can feel bigger than it needs to. You do not need the perfect plan, a theology degree, or an hour of quiet every morning. You need a place to begin—and a rhythm you can actually keep.

The YouVersion Bible App is a helpful, free tool for reading Scripture, listening to the Bible, and following a reading plan by yourself or with friends. Here is a simple way to get started.

1. Download the Bible App and create an account

Go to Bible.com/app or search your phone’s app store for the YouVersion Bible App. Open the app, choose the You tab, and select Create a free account. You can continue with email or one of the other sign-in options shown in the app.

An account lets your reading progress, highlights, notes, and Plans stay connected across devices. Use an email address you can access and a password you will remember.

2. Set up your profile without overthinking it

Add your name and, if you want, a profile photo. You control what you share. The goal is not to build another social-media profile; it is simply to make it easier for trusted friends to recognize and encourage you.

3. Add a few people you actually know

In the app, open the You tab and find Friends. You can add people from suggested connections, your contacts, or by scanning a friend’s profile QR code. Only connect with people you know and trust.

You do not need a huge list. One or two people who will pray for you, ask what you are learning, and help you keep going can make a real difference.

4. Choose a plan that fits this season

Open Plans and choose Find Plans. Search for a topic or book of the Bible that connects with where you are right now. If you are new to faith, start short—something focused on Jesus, the Gospel of John, the basics of following Christ, or building a daily Bible habit.

A seven-day plan you finish is better than a year-long plan you abandon on day four. Start small. Build the habit. Then grow from there.

5. Decide whether to read alone or with friends

You can begin a plan privately or invite friends to follow it with you. Plans with Friends show each person’s progress and include a private discussion area for the day’s reading. That can be a simple way for a Life Group, family, or a few friends to stay connected around Scripture.

Plans with Friends are started in the iPhone or Android app. If you are using Bible.com in a web browser, you can still follow an individual plan.

6. Keep one simple daily rhythm

  • Read or listen to the day’s Scripture.
  • Ask, “What does this show me about God?”
  • Ask, “What should I believe, change, or do?”
  • Write one sentence in your notes.
  • Pray honestly about what you read.

If you miss a day, you did not fail. Open the app again and keep going. Grace is a much better teacher than guilt.

How Passion chooses resources

We want every resource we recommend to support our mission, vision, culture, and core beliefs. The Bible is our authority, Jesus is the center, and grace shapes how we help people take their next step.

YouVersion includes Plans from many different churches, ministries, and publishers. Recommending the app does not mean we endorse every Plan in its library. When Passion highlights a specific Plan, our team will review its publisher and teaching first. If a Plan seems to pull against Scripture or Passion’s beliefs, choose something else and ask a pastor or trusted leader for help.

A good first step today

Download the app, create your account, and choose one short Bible-centered Plan. Then invite one trusted friend to join you. You do not have to know everything to begin—you just have to begin.
